Ternate island is very small, but very rich in natural resources, ranging from spices, marine wealth through mining and precious gem stones (called by the name of Bacan Stones).
Age town of Ternate was 762 years old.
Age that is quite old, and during which the history of Ternate city is growing very fast. Ternate has long been known internationally as a city of spices and historic city, which is a region targeted by European countries such as Portugal and the Netherlands for the colonized and taken its natural resources.
This is evidenced by the remnants of the colonial such as fortress of 7 pieces that have been recorded and the legacy of the world’s oldest clove which name is Cengkeh Afo.
In fact, a famous English naturalist, father of Biogeography world, Sir Alfred Russel Wallace had come to Ternate and stayed for 4 years.
Alfred Russel Wallace came in the morning, on January 8, 1858, he carried a letter of introduction himself to Duivenboden a resident ternate, whose Dutch ancestors.
Duivenboden school in the UK and are very rich. He has a half of city, ships and hundreds of slaves, that he was known as the king of Ternate.
Because of Duivenboden, Wallace get home, even though the house was damaged in several places but Wallace loved.
The house is close to the city. From the house, not far into the inland and mountain (the Dutch colonial times, inland and mountain as it are Salahuddin village and Skep village are marked by an orchard, according to the testimony of elders, aged about 80 years, in near my house used to be a lot of fruit, the tree rambutan, mango, guava, mangosteen fruit and berry).
My parents’ house in 2008 declared as the home of Alfred Russel Wallace, I have wrote in my previous post there was evidence of the existence of the former Wallace is a deep well and the ruins Portuguese fort opposite of the house.
In the Dutch colonial period, Village Santiong as the boundary between the native Dutch population with natives.
Orange fort to the south until the church chicken (kampung Sarani) occupied by the Dutch population.
South areas at that time, there was no church. Aside from churches chicken (Moluccan Protestant Church), there is a historic church again e.g. the Catholic Church St. Wilibrordus (in Ternate known as the Stone Church).
Starting from the fort orange to the north, inhabited by indigenous natives.
Santiong Village comes from the words ‘ san ‘and ‘tiong’ , san means grave; tiong means tionghoa (china). In the village there is Santiong Chinese cemetery.
The mount (less than 1 km from my house) there are areas of the cemetery Dutch, Chinese, and Muslim.
Dutch cemetery and the China’s tomb, many of that have been destroyed by the people to build houses.
Land owners of the cemetery area was once one owner only, then divide up to the area of cemetery (to be charitable).

In colonial times, Fort Orange is the biggest fort in Ternate.
Second, the new fort in front of my house. Possible causes of the destruction of the main building the fort in front of my house is a fortress on the bomb that hit Japan’s colonial occupation.
In front of the fort orange along 100-200 meters ahead is the sea, below the castle is exactly the Dutch General Hospital and in the area around it is no longer residential.
Opposite the front of my parents’ house, the block was once the Portuguese fort (fort about 100 feet long).
Based on the book The Malay Archipelago, Wallace home near the fort built by the Portuguese and below the castle are open to the coastal plains (note: at the present time; open to the coastal plains are shops and houses of arabic and chinese).

According of The Malay Archipelago:
A bit far from the fort is a native town which stretches approximately one mile to the northeast (now northeast of the area santiong some distance along the 1 mile is roughly orange next to the castle, the village and sub-village makassar Salero which is native town).
In Ternate, another historical place in the Portuguese and Dutch is residence gate as the ship to the port of exit and entry of Ternate and as a place of trade of entry and exit of goods, especially spices.

Quotations book of The Malay Archipelago: In the first visit in Ternate, I also went to the island Gilolo accompanied by 2 children and a young Chinese . Chinese young is brother of Wallace’s home owners who also lent us the boat and its crew.
Based on the book, Wallace homeowners are Chinese, matched with the house that I live, once is Chinese too.
The Chinese also have a lot of land around the village Santiong.
In the 1960s to the 1970s, in the village Santiong, people who have a concrete house only 1-2 people including the house that I live, most houses are made of sago stem and thatch roofs.
Most old houses around the neighborhood is the home of my parents.
